I Once Played

about

The studio version of "I Once Played" first appeared on my fall 2017 EP *About What You'd Expect*, one of seven songs. It still appears in the live set as of 2020. Its super-fun to play even though its in the key of F (capo 8!). The lyrics are about giving up on a hard-fought vision after years of setbacks. Being an original musician with a couple years of no funding and spotty moral support is not for wussies.
This recording was eventually chosen to be part of *Relics 16-17*.
The lyrical inspiration is owed to Joe Bass and his friend Steve, who through continuous stressful dramatic naysaying made me honestly feel I'd never want to play in a band again. They were the impetus, but I admit I was already carrying baggage...The Tummybuckles, A Crab's Life, and Idiot Science all ended sadly, as well, over the prior years.

I tried playing the game
but it was no good
I tired playing the game
when it was all too much
One more look at the door
but it was no good
One more swing at the floor
I bet it won't hurt much
Now I keep my head down

I tried playing the game
and was all too much to keep it all up
I tried playing the game to keep us all wrapped up
but it wasn't enough
Cuz you're no longer around
I lost a head in the sound I guess,
I once played

I fell in love with a girl
and she was so good
Then time started to turn
and it was all too much
for a time and a half
another winter is back I guess
I once played

I tried playing the game
but it was all too much
I tried playing the game
but it was all too much
and it was never enough
Yea it was never enough
Yea it was all too much
And it was never enough
because I wanted too much I guess
I once played
