about

The lyrics tell a true story about how Megan, Coral, Ben and I drove down to Rio Linda in 2012 and watched a bunch of water skiing competitions at Dean and Lisa's house. This track was recorded and mixed at Ninkaski Studios in mid-2019, with complete creative control granted to James Book.
It was written on that actual trip, and was originally called "Freedom & Free". Originally, it was slated to be the title track of my 2014 solo album but that all fell through and "Light Up The Sky" ended up being the title track of 2014's *Light Up The Sky* album. Part of the problem of not including it back then was we didn't have a recording of the band Searchlights playing it! Daniel Work (he of iconic Lake Oswego band The Noted) and I had a nice mix of it nailed down, but, it just never took.
So James and I brought it back. It remains one of my favorite live songs still into 2020, either solo or with a band...

Wastin’ time when I should be drivin’
Everyday life can be hypnotizing
Please remind me when I start to spiral away

Southbound four of us, the moon was risin’
Freedom and free on the closing horizon
Three of us for a family reunion, and I,
for a taste of the times…

Hold me close as darkness falls
my skin, my body can feel the pulse
as we move, closing on our destination
Sleep to the hum and the whine

Poolside, morning, forever, awhile
for some it’s a dream and for some a lifestyle,
Sweet surrender to the curves of the water
the smile of fortune is kind…

Easing my mind as my lady is drivin’
troubles will burn where the road does widen
Free and Freedom are words that we seldom believe
or really know what it means

Southbound four of us, and love was shinin’
Freedom and free ever mesmorizin’
too few precious days in a lifetime of strivinn’
for some peace of mind…
